Breeder Reviews by Chelsea @ TWFA
Often times I will get messages from people asking me where they can find a bird that I don’t have or a mutation I don’t have readily available. I am happy to pass along those people to the best possible options for them based on my experiences with other breeders. Here is where you can read about all of my experiences as a buyer and recommendations to help you in your search to adopt the healthiest and highest of quality feathered friend. All reviews are listed in chronological order with the most recent on top, and assigned a general rating with 4 being the highest*.

If you use one of our recommended breeders, be sure to let them know they came recommended by TWFA~

My Review: I want to give this breeder 10 *’s instead of just 4! She has not only given me some of the most wonderful Zebras and made TWFA what it is today, she has also recently placed twice in the 2013 West Coast Zebra & Society Finch show. That is not an easy feat to say the least!

She placed for her Florida Fancies, and needless to say I am in love with mine. I contacted her at the start of the 2013 season looking for Phaeos and a couple of other colors as a Valentine’s Day present from my fiance, and her response was basically “give me a list of your dream colors, and I will make it happen.” She definitely did! And with a hugely discounted price for multiple pairs, I feel like I got the deal of a lifetime.

All of the coloring on each of the birds I adopted from her are unique & stunning, exactly what I wanted. She also included some combinations that I hadn’t thought of and are pure genius, such as my LB BF BC boy Leo who produces LB CFWs (rarely). She has also lent her advanced genetics skills which I will have to take her up on this season as I start working with 3rd and fourth generations. She’s very personable yet professional and it’s been a joy to correspond with her. Whenever I make it down to the LA area again I will take her up on her offer to visit her aviary. It’s very lovely in her photos and I’m sure filled with some color combinations I haven’t seen before.

Overall, I would VERY HIGHLY recommend her breeding services to anyone looking for superior quality Zebra Finches. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my flock and I will continue to use her for years to come. It’s because of her stock that TWFA has become what it is today, and I cannot imagine coming this far without it.

Green Forest Aviaries – Wa.
Purchased: Male Red Mosaic Ino Canary
Also Available: Red Factor, Red Mosaic, Ino and other color mutation Canaries
Pecking?: No
Bird Health/Quality: Excellent
Current Status: Breeding & Offspring Available
AFA & CCBA Registered Breeder

My Review: Like everyone else who sees Blake’s gorgeous Canaries, I absolutely had to adopt one for my own! They are incredibly vibrant and nothing short of “gorgeous.” His stock is truly a rainbow of bright colors and very healthy looking and “chunky” as my juveniles @ TWFA are when they wean.

I was slightly concerned that the new voice of a strong young buck like him would overpower the other quieter songs of the Zebra Finches in the bird room, but his voice is very gracious and soft as well. His song and chatter is so beautiful and unique, so pleasant to the ears and not overpowering in the slightest as with some Canaries. I enjoy his voice so much! The other Zebra Finches do as well and are very intrigued by him much like they are with my Society Finches. The more melodious singers have been exchanging songs with him since shortly after he arrived and sung his first few notes.

His coloring is just as vibrant as I knew it would be. His red is very strong and his brown and black stripes make his overall appearance very handsome. Blake and I have come to the agreement that the “tiger stripe” markings which some of his Inos have resemble a brindle Pitbull, hence we call him my little Pitbull – he has an outgoing and active personality to live up to his nickname!

Blake raises his lovely songbirds inside of an indoor aviary located in an insulated backyard structure. This building is full of large and individual flight cages much like my setup in the TWFA bird room. My little Pitbull is very friendly and used to human interaction. He is clearly socialized and overall a happy & healthy little bird.

Green Forest Aviaries has wonderful breeding lines as it is clear to see from some of their photos. The owner has quite a talent with offspring available regularly throughout his breeding season. He has far more than the typical colors you would expect in a Canary, some mutations I did not even know existed. They are all spectacular in their own right but my favorite has really become the Red Mosaic Ino. His Red Factors are absolutely the brightest red I have ever seen in a Canary, just stunning and raised really well.

Blake was very accommodating throughout the adoption process, and even took the time to drop off the little guy personally. He was very professional and personable as well from start to finish. I highly recommend his services to anyone that is looking for a Canary and will continue to do so now as a satisfied and happy customer. I am excited to see how his aviary will expand as well once he acquires some Gouldian & Zebra Finches.

I feel blessed to have my little Pitbull knowing how spectacular he is and the exquisite genetics he’s come from. I’m honored to count this new little one as part of my flock.

Patty’s Finches & Canaries – Silverdale, Wa.
Purchased: Very dilute/”ino” CFW, White
Also Available: Canaries & BC males
Pecking?: No
Bird Health/Quality: Fine
Current Status: Breeding only Canaries now
CCBA Registered Breeder

My Review: I found Patty on Craigslist when I first came to the area. After she contacted me to purchase hens I had to sample her services for myself. I was quite a bit wary about her breeding program at first but came to find she is a kind person and a member of the local Cascade Canary Breeder’s Association. She is no longer breeding Zebra Finches but she is still breeding Canaries.

The two pairs I purchased ended up being one pair and two males but that happens to everyone and didn’t reflect on their quality. I was a little disappointed that she doesn’t have an exact hatch date for the birds I purchased but that is alright with me as well. She drove well out of her way to deliver the birds to me and was so nice to speak to!

The birds themselves are fine in quality, with sweet personalities. They are a little wary of people but they will warm up in time. They’re also still juveniles developing their full color which I didn’t know before I got them, but their markings are all correct and will be nice and vibrant as they get older.

The Urban Finch – Northern Ca.
Purchased: OB BB Fawn, BC CFW, FF/Phaeo, Eumo, BF, Penguin
Also Available: Owl, Gouldian and others
Pecking?: No
Bird Health/Quality: Excellent
Current Status: Breeding
My Review: Definitely my favorite breeder thus far! Very personable, knowledgeable and fun to engage in conversation. Her prices are generous to say the least and the quality of her birds, fantastic. I am so happy with my new pairs and I cannot wait to place another order, and another! Her colony-raised pairs produce some very interesting offspring that cover most if not all mutations. She also has some mixed pairs whose young break the stereotypes of what mutations are “supposed” to look like – which is a sign of a talented breeder in my opinion! A wonderful breeder, a nice person and a great experience for me overall.

Melodies in Flight
– Hagerstown, Pa.
Purchased: CFW, CCFW & BC
Also Available: Owl, Gouldian and others
Pecking?: No
Bird Health/Quality: Excellent
Current Status: No longer breeding, products still available
My Review: Very lovely house and breeder setup, as well as the stock I purchased. Very personable as well and was a joy to buy from. I have not been able to find a better BC pair with chestnut flanking to date. Every bird was clearly well cared for, showed no signs of pecking and very friendly, and I was lucky enough to buy out what was left of her stock since she was no longer breeding. All pairs went on to become very good parents and sweet companions that I adore. They are the type to come to the edge of the cage to say hello and to sing to me, especially the BC male who quickly found a spot in my heart as a favorite.

Finch Lover
– Reading, Pa.
Purchased: 1 pair CFW
Also Available: Phaeo, OB, BB, CCFW and other Zebra Finch mutations
Pecking?: No
Bird Health/Quality: Excellent
Current Status: Breeding
My Review: Spectacular offspring! The transaction was seamless and fast, I couldn’t wait to get my first pair home. They are the highest quality that I could have hoped for and I continue to enjoy them every day. I got to see the Finch and Canary aviaries before I took my birds home which was very important for me, and I enjoyed looking over her setup. She has quite the talent with the OB and Phaeo mutations with some I hadn’t seen before I came to pick up my Finches. The pair I purchased were clearly cared for with a well-rounded diet, no pecking damage and a friendly warmth in their demeanor. After a short period of hesitation on there part they grew more comfortable with me than some of my hand-raised babies. They now come to the edge of the cage and even perch on my arm when I’m changing their food or doing something else in their cages. I love them so dearly! I would definitely recommend this breeder and hope to be a repeat customer soon.

    • Hello Fernando!

The very red Phaeo males that my pairs produce (such as Strawberry, TWFA aviary offspring & permanent resident) are actually very rare. I don’t have a specific line who produces them constantly, it’s left up to genetic chance which is very slim at best. I do produce BF regularly however. If you’d like me to notify you via email when these types are available let me know!
